STS073-741-062 Chesapeake Bay; Annapolis, Maryland, U.S.A. October 1995
Chesapeake Bay, the largest estuary in the United States (at right), and the gently rolling, mostly forested terrain east of Washington, D.C., can be seen on the north-northwest-looking, low-oblique, color-infrared view. Heavily wooded areas appear dark red. The north-south runways of Andrews Air Force Base are visible as bright white bars near the left center of the scene. The northeastern suburbs of Washington, D.C. are discernible midway between the left center and upper left of the image; eastern Baltimore is in the upper right. Highway 50/301 can be traced from Washington, D.C., eastward through Annapolis (near center), across Chesapeake Bay, and onto Kent Island and the Delmarva Peninsula (lower right). Annapolis, the state capital of Maryland, is the business and shipping center for the fruit and vegetable farmers of southern Maryland. Annapolis is also the home of the U. S. Naval Academy.
