STS066-124-066 Lake Saint Clair, Saint Clair River, and Detroit River, Michigan, U.S.A. November 1994
Lake Saint Clair and the Saint Clair and Detroit Rivers, strategic parts of the Saint Lawrence Seaway, are visible in this north-northeast-looking, low-oblique photograph. The Saint Clair River, 40 miles (66 kilometers) long, drains Lake Huron (upper center) and empties through a delta into Lake Saint Clair (center of photograph). Lake Saint Clair, 30 miles (48 kilometers) long and covering 490 square miles (1270 square kilometers), is drained at its southwest end by the Detroit River [31 miles (50 kilometers) long], which empties into Lake Erie (bottom of photograph). Detroit lies west of Lake Saint Clair and the Detroit River. Ontario Province in Canada (right side of photograph) exhibits clear-cutting patterns that resemble those found in deforested regions of Rondonia in the upper Amazon River Basin of Brazil (reference photograph STS-046-078-026).
