STS059-154-159 Sierra Nevada Mountains and Mono Lake, California, U.S.A. April 1994 This low-oblique, west-looking photograph captures the snow-covered Sierra Nevada Mountains. Visible near the center of the photograph are Yosemite National Park and Hetch Hetchy Reservoir, an elongated white lake that supplies much of the drinking water for the San Francisco area. Two smaller lakes to the north are Cherry Lake and Lake Eleanor. Snowmelt from the Sierra Nevada Mountains is important for California drinking water supplies and agricultural irrigation during the dry summer season. Mono Lake, a spring-fed, saline lake, is visible near the bottom left. |
