STS081-747-035 Peljesac Peninsula, Dalmation Coast, Croatia January 1997
The rugged, mountainous Peljesac Peninsula (upper left) extends 43 miles (69 km) northwest into the Adriatic Sea in this southwest-looking view. A vacation resort area, fruits are grown in some valleys, and marble is quarried on the peninsula. At the top center of the image is the eastern third of the island of Korcula. The long narrow eastern portion of the island of Hvar is visible in the upper right of the image. The Dinaric Alps, a rugged mountain range, separates the narrow Dalmation Coast from the hilly interior (bottom portion) of Bosnia-Herzegovina. The mouth of the Neretva River is discernible near the left center edge of the image. The Neretva River is 135 miles (217 km) long and navigable for small vessels. The Dalmation Coast, because of its warm, dry, moderate climate, is a favorite vacation resort area.
