  STS075-723-025 Apalachicola Delta, Florida, U.S.A. March 1996
Featured in this photograph of the swampy wetlands of the coastal Florida panhandle is part of the peninsula created by the deposits of the south-flowing Apalachicola River (slightly east of center). The north-south-trending, vegetated floodplain of the river terminates at the edge of Apalachicola Bay (near right edge) and is bordered on the east by the dark, densely vegetated Apalachicola National Forest (upper right corner). Two highly reflective features are apparent--sandy beaches along the entire coastline of the Gulf of Mexico and a short, linear canal (near center) that connects Saint Joseph Bay with the Intracoastal Waterway. Visible are the Tyndall Air Force Base airport runway just south of Panama City and the dark east and north branches of Saint Andrews Bay.
