STS073-706-007 South Coast, South Carolina, U.S.A. October 1995
The southern coast of South Carolina shows the Coosawhatchie, Salkehatchie, and Combahee Rivers as they drain southeastward into the Atlantic Ocean. Both watersheds are fairly small, and their respective estuaries are Port Royal Sound and Saint Helena Sound. The grayish terrain along the coast and along the stream channels are low-lying, swampy landscapes; the darker features toward the interior show forested, more elevated lands. The linear, intersecting runways of the Beaufort Marine Corps Air Station are barely visible north of the main stream channel of the Coosawhatchie River. Light sandy beaches appear along the coastline, and sediment plumes are visible at the mouths of both rivers.
