STS064-214-018 Clear Lake and Coast Range, California, U.S.A. September 1994
Captured in this low-oblique, southeast-looking photograph is Clear Lake, a popular tourist and fishing resort and the largest freshwater lake entirely within the state of California. Covering 65 square miles (168 square kilometers), the lake is 125 miles (40 kilometers) long and 2 to 10 miles (3 to 16 kilometers) wide. Lying in the rugged Coast Range north of San Francisco and surrounded at its northern end by Mendocino National Forest, Clear Lake is fed by small creeks that originate in the wet, humid mountains to the north and is drained by Cache Creek at its southern end.
